Havanese Dog Health Issues
The Havanese Dog breed is the national dog of Cuba. The Havanese is a high maintenance dog and requires daily grooming to keep their coat silky smooth. Today I will tell you about the diseases of Havanese Dog Breeds.
Most of the Havanese dogs are healthy but some of them have health issues. Health issues are listed below.
- Cataracts
- Chondrodysplasia
- Deafness
- Heart murmurs
- Hip Dysplasia
These five health issues that I have listed are the most common.
Cataracts
This is opacity or loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. The opacity may be confined to a small area of the lens or it may affect the whole structure. Cataracts in both eyes can result in blindness. Small non-progressive cataracts will not interfere with vision. Most cataracts are inherited.
Chondrodysplasia
Chondrodysplasia Punctata is the name given to a group of multisystemic, metabolic disorders of skeletal development, primarily characterized by mild to moderate growth deficiency, short stature, and bilateral or asymmetric shortening and/or bowing of the legs. Most bones in the body are first formed of cartilage, which is gradually replaced by bone early in life.
Deafness
Unilateral and bilateral deafness has been reported in the Havanese breed. Although deafness does not appear as frequently as cataracts, it is certainly easier to diagnose and control through careful breeding practices. A one-time test is known as the BAER - Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response test is used to confirm the presence of normal hearing or to diagnose unilateral or bilateral deafness.
Heart Murmur
Dog’s hearts, like ours, pump blood through their bodies. You’ve probably listened to your heartbeat or a loved one's at some point in your life, and so you know that hearts beat regularly as they pump the blood that keeps us alive. When there is a disturbance in this blood flow, it creates an audible noise, called a murmur, that is distinguishable from a regular heartbeat with a stethoscope.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a common skeletal condition, often seen in large or giant breed dogs, although it can occur in smaller breeds, as well. To understand how the condition works, owners first must understand the basic anatomy of the hip joint. In dogs with hip dysplasia, the ball and socket do not fit or develop properly, and they rub and grind instead of sliding smoothly.
